Foldager promoted to third after unusual stage 6 in Catalunya

Anders Foldager has been promoted to third place after a strong uphill sprint to conclude a shortened and chaotic stage six of the Volta a Catalunya.

The Dane crossed the line in fourth place, but the 23-year-old was deemed to have been impeded by Corbin Strong who was eventually relegated, prompting Foldager onto the podium as a result.

The day started with confusion when the already shortened stage was set to skip the planned climbs, including the summit finish of Queralt. After a delay the peloton rolled out for a neutralised lap before racing began finally with less 30km to race.

Foldager was well-positioned as the bunch raced back into Berga, launching his kick for the line behind the solo attack of winner Quinn Simmons. The man from Denmark looked to be sprinting for a spot on the podium before being blocked and forced to throw his bike for the line in a bid for third place.

But in the end the race commissaries ruled that Foldager had been impeded, promoting him to the third place and giving him his debut WorldTour podium at the end of an unusual day of racing.

Anders Foldager:
“It was really weird [the stage], nobody knew what was going to happen and then suddenly the race started and I was actually at the back because I wasn’t ready. Then I used the next 20km to move up and it was basically just a full gas sprint for the last kilometre.

I’m happy with my first WorldTour podium for sure, it’s a big step up and I think considering the circumstances I got the best out of it and I’m happy for that.”
