Dutch sprinter Dylan Groenewegen took a tight second place in a fast and physical finish to stage two of the Tour de Hongrie.
The day always looked set to conclude with a fast finish into Kazincbarcika and the peloton made no mistake as they swept the remains of the breakaway inside 10km to go.
In what was a technical and hectic finale, Groenewegen was forced to use all his strength as he battled for road position inside the final kilometre. As the sprint opened up the 30-year-old went head-to-head with Mark Cavendish for the win, with the latter narrowly holding off the Team Jayco AlUla rider in closing metres.
Dylan Groenewegen:
“The team did a great job today, and the boys did what they could. We know that without Campbell Stewart, who crashed yesterday and had to stop, we missed a guy for the last kilometre. It meant I had to fight a bit too much in the wind and I was missing the fresh legs in the last 200 metres, but we know that the big goal is this summer and we are going in a good direction.”
