The fact that Hélène Hesters is active as a cyclist is largely because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gymnastics was not possible at the time, so she needed an alternative. Her brother, also a cyclist, encouraged her to take up cycling. In 2022, as a first-year junior, Hélène immediately won the Belgian championship (road race). In addition, that year she scored high marks in track cycling with no fewer than seven Belgian titles and two bronze medals at the European championships. As a junior in 2023, she took two gold (omnium, elimination race) and two silver medals (individual pursuit, madison) at the European championships. This season too, she remains active on both road and track and is a rider to look out for as she continued to progress at a rapid rate.
