David De Pretto impressed his rivels as he fought to second place in a gruelling 3km uphill sprint finish of stage two at Coppi e Bartali today.
The Italian rising star is now leading the young rider’s classification and is sitting in second place on the general classification with three stages to go.
The result makes it De Pretto´s second time on the podium in his debut season with Team Jayco AlUla, after his third place in stage 4 of Tour of Oman last month.
The 156.6km stage from Riccione to Sogliano al Rubicone, featured 2766 meters of climbing, the most of this year’s tour. The race was aggressive from the start with multiple spits occurring throughout the race before the peloton tackled five laps of the technical and hilly circuits around Sogliano. Team Jayco AlUla did a terrific job of protecting De Pretto so he could go into the final climb in top position to fight for the win.
David De Pretto:
¨It was second place for me today in Coppi e Bartali. I am very happy with my result at the finish line. Today was a strong race. I tried to anticipate a sprint finish with Archie Ryan (EF- Education Easy Post) but in the final we sprinted a lot and I finished second. I am happy and tomorrow is another day.
The team rode very well with Lucas and Rudy in the top group in the finale. Friday and Saturday I’m expecting 2 tough stages up and down through the Romagna’s hills. The goal is still winning a stage and finish in Top Ten on the General Classification. ¨
