Sidney Swierenga has secured a fantastic victory for the Liv AlUla Jayco Continental Team by winning the second stage of the Giro della Toscana (Premondiale Giro Toscana Int. Femminile – Memorial Michela Fanini).
The 19-year-old Canadian talent broke away from the peloton on the final climb to Valgiano, alongside Emily Dixon.
The two riders built up a small lead, but Swierenga’s Australian breakaway companion was forced to let her go after suffering a mechanical problem.
Swierenga continued solo for the remainder of the stage. After the summit of the almost 6-kilometre-long climb, only a descent to the finish line in Segromigno in Piano remained.
She held on and claimed a glorious victory. Swierenga also maintained a sufficient lead to secure the yellow leader’s jersey ahead of the final stage on Sunday.
Sidney Swierenga:
“All the girls did their jobs so perfectly, and I couldn’t have asked for better teamwork. They set me up perfectly for the climb, got me bottles all day, and did everything right. I’m super happy I was able to finish it off for them. We’re looking forward to tomorrow. It should be a long and hard day, but we’re all super strong and ready for it!”
