Italian Andrea Vendrame sprinted to third place on home soil in a fast finish to the Gran Premio del Lazio.
The 32-year-old rounded off a strong team showing to step onto the podium in Anguillara Sabazia, with teammate Alessandro Covi also grabbing top-10 placing in the sprint finale.
Team Jayco AlUla were involved for much of the 182km race as they helped pace the peloton behind the early breakaway. The team were then quick to react to the dangerous counter moves that came inside the 20km after the earlier escapees had been reeled back in.
Despite several attempts from various riders and teams to prevent a sprint finish, there was no stopping the fast men in the bunch. As the peloton raced through the final kilometre, both Covi and Vendrame moved into position, with the latter taking a strong third place with a late bike throw for the line.
Andrea Vendrame:
“Today, without a pure sprinter in the team, we decided to make the race harder and put some fatigue into the legs of the faster guys.
In the end, though, it came down to a sprint. I tried to position myself well and give it everything in the finale, but I was just a little bit short.
It’s a podium that means a lot to me and to the whole team. The legs are feeling good, so let’s make the most of this form until the end of the season!”
