Double then made a move himself, following an attack from Cian Uijtdebroeks heading into the next ascent.

While Double’s move was brought back, too, the pace had split the bunch and the overall race leader Paul Magnier had been distanced. I felt like there was a bit of pressure coming into today that we needed to get something out of the week. We knew me and Felix had good legs and the team rode well again today.

We weren’t on the back foot like we were a couple of days ago. We were always in front. We rode a really good race. Visma attacked from the bottom, but that was a launch pad for me. I got caught once and they went again. I had Bart with me on the climb, who was never going to pull because [Thomas] Gloag was trying to get across from behind, so I just had to go as hard as possible and try to ride him off the wheel. For the team, it’s awesome because they came here and won last year and for me it’s just a real confidence boost. I did it once this year, but maybe I thought it was a bit of a fluke so now I can be confident that when the legs are good I can pull off something like this.”

Okolo Slovenska stage 5 results
1.
