A breakaway group of seven went clear early but the escapees were kept at arm’s length by the bunch throughout the day.

With the gap holding steady Kell O’Brien attempted to bridge across to the leaders on the first ascent of the Corkscrew. Despite opening up a gap, the move was short lived as the Australian was absorbed by the peloton.

The stage then exploded on the final time up the climb as UAE Team Emirates teammates Jay Vine and Jhonatan Narváez went on the attack. The duo quickly opened up a gap over a small chase group with Schmid jumping across to the chasers over the summit after initially losing contact on the steep slopes.

With the two leaders out of sight and the chase group struggling to get organised, the battle for the victory was over, but a spot on the podium remained.
