Georgia Baker<\/strong> sprinted her way to a superb third place on a hot and windy stage six of the Giro d\u2019Italia Women<\/strong>, improving on her fourth-place finish on the first day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Liv AlUla Jayco<\/strong> rider survived a hectic final few kilometres with the help of her teammates, and then positioned herself well to avoid any trouble as the pace was ramped up on the technical finale. Baker then launched her sprint around the final bend with just 200 metres to go and securing herself a podium finish on the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baker and the team came into the third sprint true test of the race with plenty of ambition, having already showed her strength on stage one. After coming through two challenging days in the mountains, and with some tough days still to come, the peloton was happy to take the 159km stage at an easier pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A break of four riders was allowed over four minutes of an advantage, before the bunch began to reel them in. Crosswinds midway through the stage caused some chaos with the bunch splitting in two, but the Liv AlUla Jayco squad remained calm and maintained a strong presence in the leading peloton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The increase of speed amidst the winds saw the breakaway caught with more than 50 kilometres remaining. It soon calmed down again as the conditions eased up, but the technical finale meant it would be a far from straightforward run to the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baker was cool and collected as she kept her position near the front of the bunch, launching her sprint as the line loomed into sight. Monica Trinca Colonel also finished safely within the bunch to maintain her place in the top 10 overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I\u2019m really happy, the team rode so well. I\u2019m really proud. You could tell that the peloton was really nervous with the crosswind section, teams weren\u2019t expecting it to split so much but we were always on the front foot. I just really wanted to reward the team\u2019s work. We worked really hard for myself and also for Moni. Coming into this final circuit the team did a really good job to make sure I was at the front. Once you turned into the city centre, it was really hard to move up so they did a really good job. Finishing third, on the podium, was definitely a goal for the team.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
