The second stage of the Giro Mediterraneo in Rosa could not have been any better for the Liv AlUla Jayco Continental Team. Emma Jeffers took the victory in the bunch sprint, while Matilde Vitillo is the new leader in the general classification.
The result provided the only appropriate response after the anticlimax of the first stage where Noä Jansenseemed to be on her way to victory, before a dog crossing the road caused her to crash 25 metres before the finish line.
The team did everything they could to achieve success in the second stage, and they succeeded. In the over 113km stage, the team was in control throughout and caught the last breakaway riders in the final kilometre, resulting in a bunch sprint on the streets of Cardito-Frattamaggiore.
Jeffers had the fastest legs and took the win, while Vitillo also finished in the top five. The Italian took over the lead in the general classification as well as the points classification.
There is one stage left in the Giro Mediterraneo in Rosa.
Emma Jeffers
“The team was in control today and worked really hard. It was anything but an easy stage. It was only in the last kilometre that we closed the gap with the leading group of six riders. I am incredibly happy that I was able to finish it off in the sprint and give the team a victory. The second goal was to gain time in the general classification with Matilde Vitillo, and we succeeded in that too.”
