Dylan Groenewegen takes second at Gooikse Pijl

Dylan Groenewegen rode to his second podium finish in three days with second place at the Belgian one-day race Gooikse Pijl.

Typically, Belgian weather marked the day as the riders raced through cold and rain over a fast circuit.

A sprint finish was very much on the cards so the bunch, which was partially managed by Team Jayco AlUla, let a small breakaway of four riders enjoy a small gap off the front. Inside the final 20 kilometres, the group had been cut to just three and the advantage sat at around 30 seconds.

A crash in the final kilometres hampered Groenewegen, forcing him to have to put in a big effort to get back to the front. In the end, he still had a strong enough sprint to finish comfortably on the podium.

“As a team we were 100% committed today but in the hectic racing we lost some positions. When I was behind the crash with 4km to go, I lost position again so in the end I had to get back in position but that cost some energy. Wednesday is a new day and another opportunity.”
