Sidney Swierenga has claimed overall victory in the Giro della Toscana (Premondiale Giro Toscana Int. Femminile – Memorial Michela Fanini) after finishing sixth in the third and final stage.
The five riders from Team Liv AlUla Jayco’s Continental Team controlled the final stage superbly, ensuring the breakaway’s lead did not grow too large before closing the gap as the finish line came into view.
On the penultimate climb to Montecatini Terme, the race exploded and Swierenga found herself at the front with six other riders.
The 19-year-old Canadian talent kept her cool and withstood the attacks from her rivals in the elite group, which gained a one-minute lead over the peloton.
The race came down to a sprint for victory in the streets of Montecatini Terme with Swierenga taking sixth place, thereby securing the overall victory after an extremely strong stage race.
Sidney Swierenga:
“We’ve just finished off the third and final stage of the Giro Della Toscana with an amazing team that was able to secure the GC win. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the help from the girls because they all did so amazingly. I’m very proud of all of us because we’ve come a really long way since the start of the season. I can’t wait for the next races.”
